OMG YES I FINALLY MADE IT!!!! PhD thesis writing completed and submitted! Although I don’t think it has hit me yet, I feel relaxed and a sense of accomplishment…

I must say the final submission process is a bit anticlimactic. You put so much effort into writing, editing, reviewing, printing, compiling and binding your thesis, by the time you get to the university graduate centre you're ready for a fanfare and confetti... but alas no (too much to ask? haha). There is however a suspenseful moment, when the senior officer takes your thesis away to an office to make sure it meets the checklist of completion guidelines... before accepting your thesis as submitted! You then get to walk away with a congratulatory scroll/letter from the Dean of Graduate Studies and a balloon (#diditfortheballoon)! Thank you to the Myeloma Research Laboratory University of Adelaide, SAHMRI (South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute), and my mentors Andrew “AZ” Zannettino, Duncan “D” Hewett and Lynn Fink for a great study experience!

A few thoughts from my thesis introduction about my time pursuing a PhD:

"So here I am five seconds out from the end, reflecting back on an incredible 4 year PhD journey. More than just developing my scientific expertise, this has also been a huge personal growth experience. At the end of the day you realise its not as easy as just getting it done. Success can never be achieved on your own, and I would like to extend my gratitude to everyone that has helped me to make it to this day (which at times I thought would never come haha).”

Pursuing a PhD has been a truely incredible experience. You realise it is as much about the project, as it is the people. Its definitely a time where you learn to work hard, but also have fun enjoying the process and make life long friends. A big shout out to all my PhD colleagues from Level 5: JiJi, Mr. Muscles, CMC, Kimbruleè, Mars Bar, Natasha Strong, Quinny, Ariana (lol) and Pusheen. Also a shout out to my brothers Avi Saini and Anmol Saini for coming through! [If anyone is in thought about undertaking a PhD, click here for a previous post I wrote on the topic (PhD Do it, or Screw it?)].

“And at the end of the day, its really about, that you love what you’re doing and its about the journey. The people you’re doing it with, that you’re having fun, you’re getting up every day and you’re all working toward the same goal, whatever it might be. Its a very fulfilling feeling! It really is a very fulfilling feeling!” (Dana White)

Apologies for the long hiatus on the blog, back to the regular programming! I look forward to now enjoying some time off and writing more to share my experiences and thoughts on PhD as a whole. I hope insights from someone who has completed their PhD will help to broaden your perspectives for your own PhD journey, and remove any unknown unknowns that you may encounter in the future.

I believe this is the real “gap in knowledge” (HAHAHA) during the PhD program, where enough time is not given to developing “soft skills”, which are vital to success in todays age. At the end of the day a PhD is a training process, and both aspects of science and business/communication are required to become a professional. Prepare yourself for some great incoming content. If you have specific questions or discussions, feel free to reach out through the Contact page, or social media avenues @Facebook @Twitter @Instagram. I'm enthusiastic to engage with those making the journey!

Good luck and best wishes to everyone working on their projects and thesis! Even if you feel you are in the valley of death and everything is dark, please know there is light at the end of the tunnel and IT CAN BE DONE! Keep pushing forward! :)

“You don't set out to build a wall. You don't say I'm going to build the biggest, baddest, greatest wall that's ever been built. You don't start there. You say, I'm going to lay this brick as perfectly as a brick can be laid. You do that every single day. And soon you have a wall.” (Will Smith)

(It has been 4 weeks since submission day, and I have had the chance to engage in some life sciences industry/VC work which I look forward to share!)

You can take it as insight, or you can take it as Just BS!
